Vanderlande’s Automated Luggage Handling Solution with Zivid

Written by Thomas Embla Bonnerud | 2025-05-13

It’s not every day you witness a project that quite literally travels the world—and in this case, it made a full circle: from our Zivid HQ here in Norway to Japan and the Netherlands and now back home at Oslo Airport (Avinor). For me, the journey of our 3D camera tells an inspiring story of global collaboration and innovation.

Zivid is a company built on technology, sure. But more than that, it’s built on people who love solving hard problems, collaborating across borders, and getting things to work in the real world. This project is a great example of that:

Here’s the short version of the story: Zivid develops "best in class” 3D cameras here in Norway, commonly used in robotics systems. A handful of those cameras traveled to Tokyo, where our Japanese partner, Mujin, integrated them into a robotic “luggage handling system”. Mujin then works closely with Vanderlande, who uses that very same system in their BAGLOAD robotic loading solution. And where was the first deployment? Right back here in Norway—at Oslo Airport, where the cameras were left in the first place!

"This project is a reminder that great innovation is built through global collaboration, shared ambition, and the willingness to explore new routes."

Beyond the travel itinerary, this is a story about modern business thriving in a connected, borderless, and collaborative environment. In Oslo, heavy, repetitive lifting in the baggage hall is now being done by robots. And those robots use data from the Zivid cameras to see and understand their environment. It’s not just about efficiency or throughput—it’s about making work better for the people on the ground.

We’re proud to play a small but essential role in this, and I’m really happy to see our tech used in something that touches so many people every day.

Now, when I take a flight from Oslo, I’ll probably look at the baggage area slightly differently. I know I can trust the system to work flawlessly, and it makes me proud to know this is partly enabled by a Norwegian innovation happening here in our office.
